Clayton, DeVries & Pont is driven by an abiding passion to deliver the very best projects for its clients. Whether designing and building a new course or renovating an old one so as to restore its architectural brilliance, it does this by utilising its unique strengths.
We have an immense knowledge of the great architects of the classic era, best defined as the period between c.1895 and 1940. Two of us grew up playing and/or working on courses designed, at least in part, by Alister MacKenzie. Another grew up on a Harry Colt designed course and later studied the work of Harry Colt and Tom Simpson as part of a post-graduate degree. Because of our deep appreciation and love of these men’s work and their peers, we have dedicated many hours over many years to learning as much about them, their work and their design principles as we can.
We believe that research is a fundamental first step on the way to delivering a successful project. The architects of that era remain entirely pertinent in today’s golfing world. The design principles which they helped invent continue to define the best courses. There are no shortcuts – it takes a great deal of passion and time. Our collective knowledge base is second to none.
No other team has undertaken such a diverse set of projects. In addition to designing courses ourselves, we have over 80 years of cumulative experience renovating or restoring the works of MacKenzie, Hunter, Maxwell, Ross, Colt, Morrison, Alison, Fowler, Simpson, Park Jr, Pennink, von Limburger, Arana, Emmet, Raynor, Travis and Tillinghast amongst others. We have worked on links, sandbelt, heathland, parkland and more eclectic sites.
Our diverse set of backgrounds is incredibly useful. We boast a professional golfer with over 30 years’ experience on tour, a trained civil engineer and a hands-on designer whose skilled use of a bulldozer and Sand Pro is unparalleled. Placing classic architecture into a modern context is a complex art. It requires a deep knowledge of the game of golf not just design methodologies and construction processes. We cover all bases.
When researching, we are imbued in the past. But when it comes to implementation, we understand all facets of modern golf construction. Researching the original architecture and authoring course plans is all well and good but the critical step is the execution of that plan, delivering a final product which meets all parties’ expectations. We believe that being on-site throughout the construction phase is critical. We have the manpower and critical mass to ensure that we are always there.
We have worked with contractors, shapers, agronomists and woodland management experts on three continents. No other team has such a broad contact base amongst the industry’s service providers.
We have experienced teams on three continents, all of whom have the qualities listed above. Our partners already work together on projects in America, Australia and Europe, proving that in the modern era of jet travel, computer imagery and design, and internet communication, no project is too remote or complex to be handled.
