Broadstone
Overview
Set in the glorious Dorset countryside, Broadstone is one of the finest examples of an unspoilt heathland golf course in the South of England . The course lies within 250 acres of rolling terrain, the fairways run freely and separately through superb natural heathland with its swathes of heather, pine, gorse and rhododendrons, and several holes offer magnificent views for miles around. It has the scale of Gleneagles, possesses a beautiful and varied routing, and as one would expect from Colt it features a set of very good par 3 holes.
Colt took the course that had been designed earlier by Dunn and changed the routing significantly, thereby creating some of the most dramatic holes on the course. He also improved the strategy of the holes through smart fairway and greenside bunkering.
Our goal in restoring Broadstone is to fourfold. First we want to open up some of the vistas, both within and outside of the course. Second we want to bring back the visual grandeur of the wild bunkers that once were an integral part of the course. Third we want to restore the width of the original playing corridors wherever possible. And finally we want to make the course even more exciting to play by introducing even more risk reward options on holes.
So far the holes that were tackled are holes 5, 6, 8 and 14, whereby the focus of the works has been on restoring the bunkers back to their former Colt style and on improving the teeing areas. Work was carried out by US shaper Jeff Stein and the full greenkeeping team of Broadstone.
