HARRY S. COLT
If there is one architect whose work we at Infinite Variety Golf Design know intimately it must be Harry Colt. Over the years we have worked on more than twenty of his courses, from links to heathland, woodland and downs.
Harry Colt might well be called the Michelangelo of golf design. Not only did he build great golf courses, but he built an astounding amount of them. Add to that that virtually everything he built is very good, which is an immense achievement. Colt was able to do this because he and his team were quite methodological and consistent in their approach. His courses therefore have certain trademarks that keep reappearing, which makes it easier for us to tell quickly if and where things have been removed or altered on a Colt course. Grass faced bunkers, trees near greens or bunkers, symmetrical bunker defense of greens, even number of bunkers round greens - all are sure signs something had happened after Colt had left. But most of all his courses have strategy and variety in the way they play, and as such fulfill his key criterium for a course: "Will it live?";
After having worked at more than twenty of his courses we at IVGD find Colt the smart expert craftsman who was extremely consistent and achieved a very high quality in the execution of his design principles. There might be architects who were more artistic, but we would have Colt do the routing if our life depended on it.
